She once wanted to run Canada. She may have to make do with Chrysler instead, says eric reguly
Canada's dreary political scene, dominated by pudgy white guys in cheap suits, just lost its one bit of glamour. Belinda Stronach - heiress, babe, twice-divorced alleged home-wrecker and sometime consort of Bill Clinton - is calling it quits.
After a three-year experiment as a Member of Parliament, she's returning to the company her father Frank Stronach built, Magna International, the world's third largest auto parts maker. Say what you want about her - "all butt, no brains" was one of the less flattering quips - the woman knows when to cut her losses.
Known just as Belinda, in Canada, she traded the CEO's job at Magna in 2004 for a career in politics (Frank, now 75, was, and remains, chairman). She made a splashy debut but soon showed remarkably poor judgment. Having joined the Conservatives, then in opposition, she crossed the floor after a year to the ruling Liberals and was awarded a minor Cabinet post. But it was a bad move for 'Sell-out Barbie,' as she become known. In early 2006, the Liberals, mired in a scandal, went down in flames. Belinda considered competing in the Liberal leadership race to replace deposed PM Paul Martin. Faced with formidable rivals, among them writer Michael Ignatieff and pro-Kyoto environment guru Stephane Dion, she dropped out. Dion, the winner, gave her nothing to do. Several months in backbench Siberia were apparently enough to convince her that being rich, cute is not enough to lead people, so, she has decided to became the Canadian Paris Hilton getting her consolation prize....Bill, but a real scary rival arm with all the experience in that kind of tournaments....Hillary.
